HackTrain is arguably the craziest and most memorable 48-hour hackathon experiences on earth! A 48-hour weekend long adventure hacking whilst on moving trains! This is our 5th hackathon in the past 2 years, having gone to France and even Hong Kong!
This means different routes, challenges, datasets and venues, but the same crazy organisers!!! We’re gathering 50 of the best developers, designers and entrepreneurs from all around the world to come together to build mobile apps, websites, products and services to solve problems in the transport sector and help transport users in the UK get from A to B more quickly, efficiently and comfortably.
In the spirit of Hacktrain, there’ll also be some surprises along the way, including buses, waffle stations and an ultra secret finale venue that we’re keeping under wraps until the last possible minute! Interested? You can apply at apply.dfthacks.com!!
Pictures speak louder than words. Check out the aftermovie from our hackathons now!!
We have hundreds of applicants applying every year from around the world, but unfortunately we are limited to 40 places for the hackathon. Therefore we must go through an application process with everyone to make sure we get the best of the best for you to work with as a team!
Fill in your application form here. There are 4 sections to the form. Answer them to the best that you can! We’re not just looking for the most talented people, but also those who are a great cultural fit for the event. We want everyone to be excitable, friendly, sharing and motivated to make a difference!
A hackathon is a competition where designers, developers and entrepreneurs get together to collectively build prototypes that solve challenges using data, APIs and hardware! These participants are collectively called ‘hackers’ but don’t worry... They’re not hacking in the illegal sense! Instead they produce creative and novel prototypes using technology, data and hardware, often working through the night to get their ‘hack’ ready to pitch to the judges who pick a winner or winners.
We welcome all programmers, designers and entrepreneurs! If you're really interested in innovating the transport industry then feel free to apply!
No! We are open to coders, designers and entrepreneurs of all levels. You don’t need a CS degree to be a coder, or an Bachelor of Arts to be a designer!
Go to apply.hacktrain.com to fill in an application form! The form has 4 sections for us to get to know you better. We aim to get back to you within a week after your application submission!
Applications close on the 16th of March 2017!
Yes there is! For applicants traveling from inside or outside the UK, we provide up to £25/£50 for travel reimbursement respectively. Reimbursements are limited and are given on a first come first serve basis to applicants, so apply early!
We will provide you food from Friday’s lunch to Sunday’s lunch. If you have dietary restrictions, we’ll try our best to accommodate them. Don’t forget the abundance of snacks we’ll be providing throughout the 48-hour hackathon weekend!
On Friday night, you would be provided with hotel accommodation, but on the second night there will be none as the idea of a hackathon is to hack overnight for 48 hours! However, you can still rest when you need to!!
If you get through interview stage, the ticket would cost £25 which covers accommodation, food, travel during the hackathon and entry for the whole 48-hour weekend!
Teams are formed on the first day. You can pitch your ideas for solutions to the challenges posed at the start of the event. You will each have a chance to share a 60-second informal pitch consisting of the problem you want to tackle, the solution you want to propose, and the team members you need to make it happen. The top ideas are chosen and the teams are formed.
Raspberry Pis, arduinos, leap motion, iBeacons, drones, myo armbands, Amazon Echo and more!
The launch will be held at Department for Transport on Horseferry Rd! We will send you more details you have applied.
We will release a more detailed schedule in March. If you have applied, we will keep you updated at all times.
You can review the Code of Conduct for the rules!
You will have a chance to pitch your idea for 4 minutes + 2 mins Q&A from the judges! We split the judging criteria between 4 categories (each with it’s own percentage weighting): Business Model, MVP/Prototype, Design and Pitch/presentation. More detail will be sent to you through email before the hackathon
After you have scheduled an interview, we aim to get back to you within a week on your interview results which should determine if you get a ticket.
Nothing but a laptop, clothes and toiletries for the 48-hour weekend! And yourself!
